Incoming Distinguished Scholar Ready to Shine Inside and Outside the Classroom

Submitted on March 16, 2020

When incoming Distinguished Scholar, Harrison Booher, went about narrowing his choices for attending college, it really wasn’t that much of a contest. Upon receiving the news that he was receiving the Distinguished Scholarship, the highest honor for an incoming freshman, he felt even more called to attend Georgetown College. He said, “Georgetown was my top choice in my college selection process and receiving their highest honor confirmed what I was already beginning to feel; God was calling me to Georgetown College for the next four years.”

A personal call of congratulations from President Jones simply confirmed what he already knew, that Georgetown College had something different to offer, something special. “President Jones also contacted my family and me soon after to congratulate me. I am not sure there would be that many, if any, other colleges where the president would personally reach out to prospective students' families to congratulate them.”

Harrison will graduate from Pikeville High School in Pikeville, Kentucky this year and will begin his studies at Georgetown College in the fall of 2020. Along with his success in the classroom, he also excels athletically as a standout on the Pikeville Cross Country and Track and Field Team. Harrison will be part of an incoming class of talent for a program on the rise at GC, and this unique opportunity was another key factor in him choosing GC.

He said, “Coach Garnett, the Cross Country and Track & Field team's Head Coach, was also a big part in why I chose Georgetown College. He was the first coach to seriously recruit me out of high school and was very supportive throughout my senior cross country season as I competed and narrowed down my college choices.”

A key piece in building a program at Pikeville High School, Harrison helped the Cross Country team go from not qualifying for state his first two years to winning three straight region championships and Class A state runners up in 2019. He was also named KHSAA Cross Country Student Athlete of the Year. Now, he hopes to help build something great at Georgetown College. “The biggest thing that I will be bringing to the cross country and track and field teams is my leadership abilities. I will be looking to help Coach Garnett build the programs just as I did in high school with a goal of competing for a Mid-South Conference Championship.”

Harrison’s focus on leadership, his commitment to academics and desire to learn, as well as his drive in extracurricular activities epitomize what Georgetown College students are all about. He currently plans to be part of the pre-medical program majoring in Biological Sciences. As he prepares for his freshman year at GC, he’s eager to get started inside and outside the classroom. “I am excited to finally begin the next step of my life in academic as well as athletics. I am especially eager to experience  what it is like to be a student-athlete in college for the first time and represent Georgetown College as a Distinguished Scholar.”
